I just got a new Wide Angle lens for my Cannon Power Shot and three other 52 mm lenses came with it. I did not order them, so it must have been a package deal.

What are they? What do they do? When should they be used?
(I REALLY need to take a camera class)

PL

UV

FLD

PL=Polarizer

UV=UV filter - filters out UV light, often used for protection of the front element

FLD=Fluorescent filter. Color correction so that fluorescent light looks right with daylight balanced film.

The polarizer should turn when it's installed - adjusting the amount of the effect.

If your's doesn't rotate, it's something else. Not sure what else "PL" would be other than a polarizer...

They are filters and not lenses.

The PL is not a Circular Polarizer filter(CL PL) and it's not compatable with most digital cameras but it may work on a Canon P&S.

The UV filter could be useful on a hazy day.

The FL is useful if you can't change the White Balance and want to shoot under flourescent lights inside a building lit that way and put the FL filter on the lens.
