Photography classes/workshops in Michigan??

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good places to take photography classes or workshops in Michigan. I'm in the Metro-Detroit area. My funds are kind of limited. I'm looking at taking some classes at the local community college, but for their intro to digital photography class, it says that you need a 35 mm camera with manual controls and your own film and paper, which didn't make sense to me. I want to learn more about using the camera I have...I don't want to go out to buy a whole new camera. So now I'm looking for other options. Thanks!
