Photoshop Questions

I am really not sure how to word this question. I have seen where a person in a photo looks like it has been cut out of it's background. So it's just the person without a background behind it. How can you do this???

Also, I have seen where multiple (4 or 5) poses of a person is put in one single picture...how is this done??

I have Photoshop CS4.

I hope these questions make sense...it's kind of hard to describe what I'm talking about. THANKS!

do these paid for filters just do something that you could do manually in PS anyways... but just make it a lot easier?

Except for ReMask, these plug-ins work equally well with the full PhotoShop, Elements (V6 and above), Lightroom-2 and iPhoto. ReMask requires the full PS. My one gripe is the absence of USABLE instructions.
