I am linking my audio file reading the first couple of pages of Pierre Burton's book "My Country", chapter 11, "Ned Hanlan and the Golden Age of Sculling". Since the article is only about 20 pages, I don't feel that it would be right for me to read more than this much, so I will not be posting more later. If I find related pictures, I will replace this file with the same audio file (or maybe a re-read) with embedded video or stills, but it will not be any longer. I expect the book is available in libraries ("definitely" in Canada and "probably" in the US). Ned Hanlan was an interesting person. He was sort of the Mohammed Ali of sculling. He never got an Olympic medal, because the modern Olympics didn't start until after his career was over. But he was quite a "self promoter". He might still have standing records. I haven't checked.
