Please help Santa's little helper

I really like this photo. Took it over the holiday weekend. Only problem is, the sun was bright that day! Any ideas on getting rid of the shadow, or am I stuck with careful, laborious cloning? Thanks

In photoshop CS there is a highlight/shadow adujustment, and you can brighten up just the highlight.
