I have been using a sigma 50mm EX DG lens for portrait work. It's great except when photographing a group. The depth of field is shallow.

Next week, I'm photographing a group of 12 and I need greater depth of field. Any suggestions of a better lens to work with.

Thanks.

I am not up on Sigma lenses, but I would assume that they work like every other lens on the planet. If you need more depth of field, choose a higher f-stop. For example, if you are shooting a single subject with an aperture of f8 and you want more depth of field for a group, try f11 or f16.

Just my $0.02

A shorter focal length will give you more depth of field, but as AOC said for enough to include a group of 12 people a 50mm at f16 should be plenty.

it also depends on your distance from the subject. if there is only two rows of people, at 20 or 30 feet, f4 would probably suffice, but f8 is a good median to use.
