(Probably dumb) lightroom question

Hey all

So I'm aware that lightroom doesn't actually 'save' edits, rather it just saves information in a catalog file. But, when I upload the files using the 'publish' feature (like to Flickr or Smugmug) I get the unedited, original file. How do I publish the edited file? Do I really have to do an export first?

You need to export so that the development changes can be applied....that is what I know, maybe another way.

Thats what I do. I export to jpeg then upload.

The edited Raw file has to be converted to a file format that can be published, like JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, etc.

Lightroom is a parametric image editor. Edits are in a XMP text file made up of XML line commands that tweek the image rendering algorithms.

I never export when publishing to Flickr. I edit in raw and publish to Flickr or 500PX. Lightroom handles the conversion to jpg including all the edits. Maybe there is something in the settings?
