I've had my Canon T4i for a few months and like it's ability to function with a remote control. The RC-6 generic controls I've bought on ebay for $3-4 only seem to last for a few hundred photos before biting the dust... I wouldn't mind spending more money to get a better piece of equipment but there really isn't much to them. Is the Canon brand that costs 10 times more any better?

I'm sure you did this already but did you check the battery in the remote?

I have the actual canon one and sometimes even though it's more money it's worth it. I haven't had a problem with mine. But you are right. There isn't much to them and it should be working regardless.

Yes, definitely bought new batteries which almost cost as much as the unit did...and no luck
