I think your mistake is trying to work through the photographers. They may not be open-minded enough to see the potential. Also, they are greedy, and don't want to share. They probably figure that if their clients ask for that kind of thing, they can just photoshop one up themselves.
I'd aim right for the clients, so that they ask the photographer to use your services. The trick is going to be getting them to request you specifically, instead of just the effect.
