So I recently upgraded my PS from CS3 to CS6.

So far I am adjusting just fine, but there is something going on that is driving me absolutely nuts !!
I am hoping someone can tell me how to turn it off. I've tried everything I can think of and google'd everything I could think of and can't find the fix.

When I toggle the visibility of a layer on and off, the background changes. The background will go from black, to dark gray, to transparent, then cycles through them again.

As if it couldn't get worse, the toggling appears to be random. There is no rhyme or reason.

It's like there is a setting that is toggling them automatically, but I can't find this in the preferences and settings.

Has anyone had this happen ? Do you have any idea what is going on?
It is driving me crazy and it is extremely difficult to get any work done in this environment.

Nothing that would help comes to mind, but I'm still using CS 5.

As complex as CS 6 is, it really helps to have a good reference handy, like - Adobe Photoshop CS6 for Photographers: A professional image editor's guide to the creative use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC

I contact the member Help Desk at NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) before I resort to calling Adobe. Photoshop User | Learn Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Digital Photography | NAPP
Check out the new Online Training for both Lightroom and Photoshop, and all the software and hardware discounts NAPP members get.
We even get a 15% Adobe software discount - on upgrade pricing too.

Thanks, I am on the trial right now. I wonder if they provide support while on the trial version. I will call them tomorrow. I wonder if it is some sort of incompatibility with my graphics card. I just bought a new computer a few weeks ago.

I don't remember seeing this weird behavior on my old pc. I had the first week or so of the trial on that one.

I just wanted to post an update that I fixed the problem. I found the solution at this page.
It turns out it was the graphics processor after all. All is well again. :)

Thanks for the suggestions.

Photoshop CS6 GPU FAQ

[h=2]Here is the paragraph that solved the problem[/h]

If you experience crashes, incorrectly rendered windows or objects, redraw issues, or performance issues, determine whether OpenGL is causing the problem.

[h=4]1. Turn off OpenGL.[/h]

  1. Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS).
  2. In the Performance panel, deselect Use Graphics Processor. Click OK.
  3. Restart Photoshop, and perform the same function.
If the problem recurs while OpenGL Drawing is disabled, OpenGL is not the cause. For additional troubleshooting, see Troubleshoot system errors and freezes | Adobe software on Windows or Troubleshoot system errors and freezes | Adobe software on Mac OS 10.x.
If the problem resolves, proceed with the rest of the troubleshooting steps to fix OpenGL.

Thanks for the update. CS 4 was the first release of CS that was Open GL capable, which had many of us upgrading our computers graphics card.

CS 4 had a new 3D rey-tracing rendering engine that allowed the conversion of gradient maps to 3D objects, adding depth to layers and text, and getting print-quality output.

OpenGL supports that 3D engine. OpenGL uses memory on the GPU card, which is why people were scrambling to upgrade their GPU cards
