Putting text over film

Does anyone know how to put text over film as they did in old movies where they e.g. put the title of the movie or the name of the actors in the first scene? A great example of this is also the music video for (Nothing but) Flowers by the Talking Heads. Would be really fun to experiment and use these effects in photos.
