Photos NOT OK to edit
i noticed that some HDR photos have a certain - i guess you can call it - "glow" to them. or it's like they have more "pop" to the colors. not really due to saturation but something else. hope you know what i'm trying to get at. a perfect example is Trey Ratcliff's work over at Stuck In Customs HDR Photography - his photos are beyond phenomenal. is it all in the post-processing? could it be certain programs and/or filters of some sort? what's the secret (besides a lot of patience and practice)?

You have, to some extent, answered your own question as 480 sparky has said; however there are a couple of things to think about...a lot of people process their HDR images in Photoshop or Lightroom after the conversion to HDR, as well, I know that Trey often uses a larger number of images than most of us - I have seen some of his where he has used 5, 7 or more images to build his HDR image and, I suspect, this may add to the "look" of the final image. You should also go and look at work by Brian Matiash - some of his are similar to Ratcliff's. Look here... My Portfolio | Brian Matiash PhotoBlog , as well, it may be that the software that folks use may help contribute to this final look. This may not answer your question completely, but it may help you get further towards the answer you are looking for. I would encourage you to go and Google "HDR photography" and have a look at some of the results - you may be surprised by what you find.

There are so many versions of HDR and tone mapping, some ultra-realistic and some grunge/painterly styles.
Find the style you like and practice, practice, practice.
