Hi Everyone:

I am looking for an inexpensive not-attached viewfinder. This is something you use to “find” a photo, without bringing the camera to your eye, and begin the early composition like symmetrical, asymmetrical, 1/3, adding perspective, etc. I used to have an inexpensive one, which became an indispensable tool. However, I cannot find it – 15 years! It is probably with 135mm lens and Super Contaflex camera - somewhere.

I do not want a $300.00 gadget like a super-dooper rangefinder that golfers use. Maybe I can get if from an old rangefinder camera that had it not built in the camera. Any suggestions?

Thanks and best regards,

Ramesses

old 35mm slide holder
Hi Traveller:

I see now. I’ve forgotten about those. The type you put the slide in and look through pointing at a light source. Great idea!

Thanks and best regards,

Ramesses

A simple piece of opaque cardboard with a rectangular cut out will serve. Make the ratio of the cutout identical to your format. If you want to get a bit fancier, glue four thin wires in position to cut the area into 9 equal rectangles [rule of thirds].

Total cost? Small. Usefulness? Large.
