I've picked up and played with a Canon several times and noticed that on the dial there is a B (I assume for "bulb"), and M for manual...but why do they use Av & Tv for aperture & shutter priority? I assume that's what those are for. Why does "T" stand for "shutter" and what does the "v" mean?

On Sony, Nikon (at least the d90), and Olympus they are labeled with easy-to-understand M, S, & A. I was just wondering why Canon & Olympus chose Av & Tv.

I'm not 100% but I've heard people refer to them as 'Aperture Value' or 'Time Value'.

I believe Big Mike is correct...I've seen them referred to as "Aperture Value" and "Time Value" too.

I've always assumed that the v stood for variable, because that is the factor that you are changing.
