I setup is a Canon 450D with Canon EF-S 17-55 and 75-250mm lenses.

I am trying to get more detailed shots of small marks on coins and things like maker's marks / hallmarks on some jewelry pieces I have.

Which would be the most cost-effective method of accomplishing closer macros that I can currently obtain with my 17-55mm - Vivitar Extension tubes or a Raynox DCR 250 magnifier? Also, can someone point out the advantages of each one?

Thank you from a very green novice.

I'm not familiar with the Raynox, but I'd be willing to bet that the extension tubes will provide a better quality result Be aware though, that you may lose some or all of your automatic functions, including metering and focusing.

Yes, I have read that and thus know the Vivitar and Kenko versions have electronic contacts allowing the AF functions to remain.

The Raynor is a clip-on magnification lens and shortens the focal distance from around 11mm to 6mm. Still, not sure which way to go.
