Is the 70-300mm lens here:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=11093567&whse=&topnav=&cat=&s=1

the same as this one?

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007Y794O/002-0542272-6099262?v=glance&n=502394&n=1000&s=photo&v=glance"]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007Y794O/002-0542272-6099262?v=glance&n=502394&n=1000&s=photo&v=glance[/ame]

And if so (or even if not) will I need this particular 70-300mm lens or is there a better (cheaper?) alternative.

I'm a serious amateur hoping to get into part-time pro in the next year...kids, pets, portraits, etc. I can't figure out if I want the Costco deal (don't really need the printer--already have a better one) or the Amazon deal ([ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002XQJFA/002-0542272-6099262?v=glance&n=502394&%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance"]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002XQJFA/002-0542272-6099262?v=glance&n=502394&%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance[/ame]).

Thanks for any input!

If you don't need the printer, then you could save on the lens and 20D seperately. I don't think you'll need this particular lens unless you plan on doing a lot of hand held shots. I personally hardly ever use a tripod and I really want this lens!!! It normally sells for about $650.

For your needs, I think you would be better off with a faster lens. Something f/2.8 Kids and pets move a lot. You'll want the larger aperature for low light. I also don't think you'll need that massive zoom for portraits, unless they're going to be outside and you want to get an away vantage point. You might even consider the Sigma or Tamron 18-200mm? Pretty wide with some zoom and you could still use it for portraits. But again, they're not that fast.

You do make an excellent point. I guess I like the idea of that zoom lens but it's probably not what I would be using for my portraits most of the time. I bet it's heavy and cumbersome too. I just want it--but I want all of them, LOL!
