Received the Wrong Lens

That is crazy you guys think someone has to fork out that much money for that mistake from their paycheck or fired. Large retailers all use bar code scanners for this reason. They are trying to reduce mistakes. I say it is a computer malfunction.

You expect a guy working in the shipping department to understand everything they are selling? They probably have no clue with IS vs non IS.

If they did realize the mistake, they will contact the buyer frist trying to fix their mistake. They are not going to fire anybody. Hell... my buddy is an industrial engineer. He designs warehouses for large online stores (multiple online stores in one warehouse). Do you know how the guy in the shipping department get the product? By pressing a button. A robot will go get the pallete full of the product (almost like a fork lift that goes to different coordinates XYZ). It is all tied to the software. They use robot and software to minimize error.

But the keys where in the car so I took it. Its not my fault it was the person who left the keys in the car....same thing different scenario, a crook is still a crook.

I know that this scenario is hard to gage when your not in the OP's shoes and we shouldn't judge but like Ann said in the first page of posts. You know what you should do, you know what you want to do and your looking for validation. And look at the can of worms you opened up lol. Anyways good luck in whatever you decide.

Well Dee when your kids steal something from a store then you have no right to discipline them because you where not in "their shoes". no matter how you try to twist it around its still wrong

Bit harsh.. no? When did she say she was totally for keeping it??

People, this is again one of those threads where trying to force your beliefs on someone else just isn't going to fly.
The OP has every right to do what he wants and shouldn't feel guilty because of anyone here... if he feels guilt it should come from within himself... if he doesn't then ok, put it down to win some loose some i guess.

Beliefs? I guess being moral is now a belief? So you would keep it?

Lets flip this around lets say they sent you a cheaper wrong product, would you expect them to fix the problem?

Um have you read the thread through its entirety? I don't believe so. Because if you did, you would have noticed I said I am believer in Karma and would want to do the right thing.

My last post was to attempt at smoothing over the waters where sometimes people get harsh and preachy directed at the OP which is never a good thing. Ya ya, its an open forum, develop a thicker skin etc whatever. I hate seeing threads turn into witch hunts. So back the truck up and read the f@#king thread before you throw some smart ass comment directed at me.

I read the entire thread and being wishy washy and politically correct does not accomplish anything. I believed I thanked you for your Karma response If not I ran out LOL

Actually this entire thread wont accomplish anything.

Those who are honest will remain honest and those who are not will also remain the same.

Yea... questioning me isn't really a good idea at this point....

That kind of was my point.

people can be changed and learn to relise whats right and wrong. if you do something you think is cool and all of your buddies tell you how wrong you were chances are the next time it happens most people will begin to think twice about it.

i just dislike how people want to justify things by saying its a big corporation and they somehow deserve it. i usually find these are the same people who will grip about said coporations price hikes.....wonder why there raising the price.....

Alright time to put this thread to rest. I know I have to call them just wanted to put my own moral dilemma out on the table.

I really find it hard to believe that all of you would have immediately picked up the phone, you really can't say that until you are in this position.

Second, I haven't done anything wrong here, I received the lens late Friday night after their customer service lines were closed. It's not like I tricked anyone into sending me something I didn't pay for.

Third, references to Goldman Sachs are a stretch again, I made no attempt to fraud anyone and this one instance isn't going to be the fall of the global economy.

Lastly, I find it sad that lines have been drawn and possible friendships have been ended due to this discussion. What happened to forgiveness?

Anyway, Arch if you want to close this thread that's fine, otherwise I'll update tomorrow with a response from the company I ordered the lens from.

PS: Next time I see $20 on the street, I'll just keep walking.

Goldman Sachs? Really guys?

I would personally return the lens, just because it seems like every time I do something morally wrong it comes to bite me in the ass. Let them know, they might just let you keep it.

Not exactly the same thing. Taking a car because the keys were in it takes a concious action on your part to take the car. A better scenario would be if you bought a new car without leather seats or navigation, but the one they gave you had leather seats and nav. Goes directly back to my original analogy to Monopoly: Bank error in your favor. Collect $200.

I worked in retail for several years and if something was messed up on our part (mislabeled item, item placed in wrong section) which caused the item to be rung up cheaper, we had to abide by the posted price (even if it was wrong) and give them the item for what was listed. Now the customer could decide to be kind and generous and say "oh, no, that's ok, I'll pay the full price" justifying it on their morals or whatever reason, but there is no obligation to do so, and in fact they are entitled to the cheaper price because of our mistake (at least that was the policy at any of the stores I worked at).

To be honest, other than this last page, I found this one of the most interesting and civil debates on "what would you do" in a while. At least it's better than the "this camera is inconsequentially better than that camera" arguments that usually happen here.

So keeping an item that YOU know is wrong is not a conscious action? So you are unconscious then?

at the same time its probalby best to also assume that some of us have allready been in the same type of situation. things like this arn't new. this isnt the first time its happened. i can name off at least three instances ive been in with a similar situation.

If you have to put it out on the table they you already know the answer. You are just looking for someone to make you feel better. When I was a teenager getting ready to go out on a date one time I asked my momma if I needed to change shirts. She told me that if I had to ask that question then I should have already changed the shirt cause I already knew the answer I was just looking for an excuse.

I really find it hard to believe that all of you would have immediately picked up the phone, you really can't say that until you are in this position.
Like I said, I have been there, done that and have the t-shirts. Actually I have a much better piece of equipment than what I ordered at the companies discretion, not mine.

Second, I haven't done anything wrong here, I received the lens late Friday night after their customer service lines were closed. It's not like I tricked anyone into sending me something I didn't pay for.
That is correct. Don't know that anyone has said that you have done anything wrong. There are some poster however who have shown their own moral value or lack there of by their posts.

Third, references to Goldman Sachs are a stretch again, I made no attempt to fraud anyone and this one instance isn't going to be the fall of the global economy.
My vote doesn't count, they are a big company they won't miss it, the check is in the mail. Yada...yada...yada. Goldman Sachs didn't defraud anyone. People, individuals that work there and other places did so of their own volition. Whether someone works for a giant multi-national company, a small mom and pop business or are just on their own, right is right and wrong is wrong.

Lastly, I find it sad that lines have been drawn and possible friendships have been ended due to this discussion. What happened to forgiveness?
Same thing that happened to honesty, integrity and decency. Forgiveness implies that there was regret and a change of heart.
