I am working with a canon rebel xsi and I have a 70-300mm lens. I am looking for some recommendations on a better lens as this lens doesn't allow me to getting close up shots of planes during an airshow. I want better detail in my shots. I was told to try the 100-400mm and a 70-200 and 50-500mm. Thanks for any information.

Hi
I've had the 70-300 three years ago and went to cosford airshow. Same here with image IQ!
The lens is well known to be no good at 300mm where the sigma is a different story. Really sharp for a £300 lens. Read the comparison between the budget zooms in this months photo digital magazine.
I would love the 100-400is ism lens. Especially for portability. The sigma 500mm is supposed to way a ton but gets good reviews. Canons 400mm prime is the oldest lens with no IS so you would need a tripod. 100-400mm can be hand held. Hopefully Vulcan bomber will be at Bournemouth this August!!

I've shot with the 100-400L, 70-300 & 70-300L. I went and bought the 70-300L and love it. But I travel a lot and needed a smaller long lens. If I were to have a dedicated airshow lens it would be the Sigma 50-500. There's a lot of neat stuff on the ground to shoot as well and you can miss some of that with 100 or even 70mm on the short end.
