Replace Nikon D40 lens or upgrade?

D7100? Or do you mean D7000?

Even if replaced in the current Nikon line up a D5100, or a D7000, would still be good, sound, choices.

I would upgrade both if the price allows. If money allows, D3200 is a great choice as the D5100 and D7100 are probably going to be replaced soon.

If not, the Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 OS lens is probably your best replacement choice after the 17-55mm F/2.8 Nikkor.
