Can others edit my Photos
Photos NOT OK to edit
I was emailed this by the editor that I am doing an internship for and I cannot get a clear answer as to what she wants exactly. If anyone can help I would be grateful. I did export them out of lightroom as jpegs but only for her to review. If I were to send her the usable file from lightroom what would my setting upon export need to be?

"Got these three images, thanks. I see they are 720 dpi... when I take them to 350 they are 4" wide x 6" high. The magazine full bleed area is 8.875 x 11.375, with a live image area of 7.875 x 10.375. If you can keep that proportion in mind for future images that would be great."

The part I do not understand is why she would take it down from 720 to 350 and then say it's too small??

I'm not sure that I fully understand DPI but, isn't 720 smaller than 350?

It sounds like she wants files with minimum dimensions of 8.875 x 11.375 when the resolution is set to 350 ppi. That is equivalent to how I send the high res files to the printing company. I don't crop camera original files to the required aspect ratio - the person who designs the page does that - I simply make sure that the high res version of the file meets or exceeds the full bleed size at the required ppi (in our case we use 300 ppi, but at 300 ppi the nominal file dimensions must be at least 110% of the printed image dimensions). I also send a low res to the graphic artist at the same nominal physical dimensions as the high res file but 1/4 the ppi (ie 75 ppi in our case). This allows them to lay out the page using low res files, then later drop in the high res files with no cropping or sizing errors.

If the pixels-per-inch (PPI) at 350 gave 4" x 6" images it tells me:
1. The aspect ratio (porportions) of the images was 3:2. (3:2 can also be stated as the long side being 1.5 times the short side - 3 divided by 2 = 1.5)
2. Some 5th grade math shows 350 ppi x 4" = 1400 pixels, while 350 ppi x 6" = 2100 pixels.

To get - "It sounds like she wants files with minimum dimensions of 8.875 x 11.375 when the resolution is set to 350 ppi."

11.375" x 350 ppi = 3981.25 pixels
8.875" x 350 ppi = 3106.25 pixels.

Thanks "KmH" for the answer. I had no idea about the PPI.

If you are using your 60D, and you are using the full resolution (5184x3456), your images should be larger than that, which is OK.

Okay, I read this thread three times now.

Nobody says it.

8.875 x 11.375 of WHAT ?

The per-inch part of PPI is a big clue some basic math can be used to manipulate the numbers by re-arrangeing the basic equation with algebra:

Pixels divided by Inches = PPI (3000 pixels divided by 10 inches = 300 PPI)

PPI times Inches = Pixels (inches cancel) (300 PPI times 10 inches = 3000 Pixels)

Pixels divided by PPI = Inches (pixels cancel) (3000 pixels divided by 300 PPI = 10 Inches)
