Specifically in the market of senior portraits. I would love some feedback on some things we're trying out...

We've decided to offer a number of "gift prints" -- these will be sizes from wallets (of course 8 to a set in wallets) up to 8x10. Each package will have a set number of gift prints in which the student/parent can customize from those sizes. Make sense?

How does that sound so far?

In my experience, people place no value on 'gifts'. They figure if they aren't costing them anything, they probably aren't worth anything. It's not a direction I would go from a promotional standpoint, but it could be that your client base is different than what I would be interested in.

Now, on the other hand, a 'free' 8x10 and wallets for any booked referral might be a different story.

I think I explained that poorly! They're not free. What I'm saying is like this: (arbitrary numbers)

Old package. $50
(1) 8x10
(4) 5x7
(4) wallet sets

New package. $50
10 gift prints of your choice
(wallets up to 8x10)

Does that make more sense?

Okay, definitely misunderstood what you meant by gift packages.

Basically, you are saying that instead of having a package, you are going to leave it up to the client to customize their individual packages within a set range?

I like it from a consumer standpoint, but not so much a business one. Often, people will step up to a larger package because there is one thing in particular they want. By allowing them to get that one thing in a smaller package, I would think the size of packages most people order would probably decrease.

Instead of looking at it as, "well, I definitely need this for Aunt Louise", I think they will look at it more as, "okay, in this package, I can get this for Aunt Louise, this for Susan, this for dad, and these wallets for friends". By letting your client completely customize their packages, they will never buy more than they need. Like I said, good for the client...not so great for the business.

Well, the packages (except the lowest one) has more than just that in it. I'm on my phone now, but I'll be at the computer later and will lay out the packages. I guess it's hard to give feedback on my poorly-explained idea with partial info! ;-)
