I'm just curious: The SB-700 is limited to 120mm (at least, that's what I read). Does this mean the 127.5mm field of view of the 85mm 1.8G on crop is just out of range? Or in the case of flash, would this be within an acceptable range?

Sounds like it's time for some testing.

That is just the beam pattern..Normally your flash is modified with a soft box etc.. And should be close to the subject anyway...Unless you are talking about it being on the camera..But that being said..Your throw will be determined how close or far you are from subject..

Paul, I'm pretty sure that a "120mm beam" would cover a WIDER angle than a 127.5mm lens' angle of view.

Alrighty. Just checking. I have almost zero knowledge about flash photography at the moment -- I think it's time to do some reading & YouTube watching.

It's all just basic physics.

At a shorter focal length the beam of light the flash unit emits needs to be wider than when longer focal lengths are used, because the field of view of the camera lens changes by getting narrower as focal length increases.

Another general consideration though is that as focal length increases so does the camera to subject distance. So the consideration is the fact the intensity of the light is inversely proportional to the square of the distance to the subject. In other words, if you double the distance, only 1/4 as much light reaches the subject. Inverse-square law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Well, I got my SB-700 :) It's really nice. I'll really get to play around with it later tonight.

About to pull the trigger on one myself, and start learning about flash photography. Let us know what you think of it!

I definitely can't say much now. It's a flash. I like what it's doing for my pictures so far, but I've been shooting indoors with my 85mm 1.8G. I got a 50mm 1.8D for Christmas, going back and exchanging it & getting the G (it was a mistake by the salesguy actually -- sounds like he was trying to unload 1.8D stock).

I'm pretty sure to the flash 85mm is 85mm and you don't need need to multiply by 1.5 just because you're on crop.

When you mount the flash, the zoom head should read 85mm if you're using an 85mm lens.
