SD card losing memory?

I have went through two sd cards, an 8 and 16 gig. with the two cards I've taken about 4000 pictures, but on both cards, each will only hold 40 or so raw images. when the 32 gig was new it held at least 2000 raw images. When i put it on my computer i always eject it properly. Am i doing something wrong, or does this just happen? Thanks!

When you put it back in your camera "format" it, you should then get all your filled memory space back.

Did you get a camera that has more MP?

Did you change the camera from 12-bit Raw to 14-bit Raw?
A 16 GB card should hold about 1000 12-bit Raw files.

Also image file size varies by image content. A photo of a solid color wall will a smaller file than a photo of a street scene.

Are there files on the card that weren't created by the camera?
