Very harsh light on the front and a very strong light from behind as well. The two lights are fighting one another, not working with each other. I think you should soften the key light and don't have the back light illuminate the background or cast a shadow in front of the subject.
Given the position of the sun, I would shoot from the opposite direction, using the sun as the main light, and using my flash as fill to lessen the shadows. If the sunlight is too harsh, you can make a homemade scrim and find somebody to hold it creating open shade on your subject.
Sometimes open shade as you find it is quite nice, and you would still use fill flash there, so you can practice that.
