how do you select large areas in photoshop with the lasso tool when zoomed in around 300% and up? whenever i try , the screen just scrolls very fast and with no control. how do i scroll the screen while using the lasso?

I typically don't lasso at that magnification. I usually do it at about 200% max, then if there's something I want to change or revert back to in a small area where the lasso didn't work, I do it after I'm done using the lasso tool (i.e. erase or history brush) for fine-tuning.

Try holding down the space bar to pan the image...but really, the lasso tool is not the best way to make precise selections. There are a number of different techneques...try a search...someone asked the same question last week.

Yes, the space bar works fine for it, and you can zoom in and out using + and -

im using PS 5.0, i dont think i have the pen tool... i have a pencil tool?

It might be hidden behind the direct-selection tool (white arrow--its the icon to the left of the text tool), but PS 5.0 does have it. It will draw a path to the path palette.

Here's a short tutorial to get you started.

It might seem difficult to learn at first, but stick with it and you'll open up one of the better tools in PS.
