Selling to a niche online

I am a ballroom dancer, and I know a couple of different photographers in my city that go to local dance events, take pictures, and then post them online for sale as prints or jpegs. They seem to do pretty well. In addition, they often arrange to do photo shoots at dance studios where people dress up in their dance outfits, and then they sell them by the jpeg, but don't charge for the time worked. People view the photos online and pick the ones they want to buy.
