Here is a picture taken with a Nikon D7000 combined with a Tokina 12 28. What do you think of the sharpness? Exif: f/16, 1/25, iso100.

Way to slow a shutter speed for the trees.
Even if you nailed the shutter speed, you might be approaching a pixel peeper situation by going beyond 1:1.

As for testing the lens. There are plenty of articles on the web about it. To be consistent you need to shot on a tripod against a regular wall pattern. Brick walls are some of the most common adhoc solutions.
