Hey, I own (or have access to my dad's) Nikon F, and I've shot a roll or two with it, and in cleaning it I found that not only is it possible to pop off the pentaprism, but that I kind of prefer shooting with it. Alright I havent actually shot a roll but I've looked through the magnifier and I find it a lot easier to focus and compose through a bigger screen. My only question I guess is, assuming I kept the pentaprism in a safe place, would it be generally safe to shoot without it? I know a lot of TLRs and larger format cameras shoot like that but is it okay with an SLR?
Thanks

Sure. I've shot my F without the prism on it. Focusing is not the easiest, but it works okay. The F is highly modular, and can easily be cleaned out when dust and junk gets inside it.

There is a waist level finder for the F that makes this a little easier in
that it has a pop-up magnifier for use in focusing. It also shades the screen.
