Should I Buy This Lens?

Your idea of the Canon EF 100mm f2.8L IS USM, is a very good choice. You'll be able to do portraits without getting right up close to your subject. Keep in mind, this is a very sharp lens, and reveal every little bump on your subjects face. You may want to look into a good post processing program. As far as for Macro, it will serve you well. You will not have to get that close to bugs and other subjects. I think the minimum focus distance is 18-19 inches.

Super impressed with the lens! A massive upgrade to my other two and I am in heaven with this. The images are just out of this world. Going to do some portrait shots soon, organizing with friends to test out the lens. I am on the Adobe CC monthly subscription, which I use daily. Realized it when I captured a bee on a flower, the lens is really out of this world!

Careful with that lens - be VERY careful.

I got a macro lens once - now I own 4 and loads of other things and have my eye on auto-stackers and laser trip rigs for in-flight bugs. Macro can be like an addiction ;)
