Sigma DG Lenses

I'm considering buying a Sigma 20mm F1.8 EX DG. Is Sigma's "DG" similar to Canon's "EF-S" or will this lens also work on a 35mm film camera?

DG lenses provide full compatibility with film and digital SLR's but have been 'optimized' (there's no detail on exactly what this means) for use with digital SLR's.
