I bought a nikon 70-300 but the focal length wasn't wide enough. I went to Henry's here in Toronto and tested the sigma 18-200 on my D5100 and I was impressed. I can get the 18-200 here for around 300 used but i was wondering if the 18-250 would be a better choice since it gives me a macro function as well. I just want to know if the extra $100 is worth the extra 50mm in length and the macro function?

Neither of those lenses are of high optical standards. If you don't care about soft images and plan on shooting in daylight almost all of the time, get the 18-250mm.

So at the $500 price range and around that focal length (18-200) what would you recommend? I am not familiar with the other brands of lenses for nikon dx's but all i know is that i can get them significantly cheaper used than a Nikon lens.

Save up another $96 and get a Nikon? B&H has them on sale for $596 through March 2nd. $250 off. JD

So your saying to go with a nikon 18-200?

super zooms like that aren't particularly loved around here (18-200, 11x zoom or whatever that might be [just a guess]), but I have the 18-200 lens and I'm very happy with it.

lots of lens distortion on the 18mm end, and I get some vignetting at the 200 end. I've never shot with a super expensive lens to know what real clarity is like, I'm really just starting out, but I'm getting some pretty sharp photos.

an example.
