Silly and amaturish question

So I just got my 580ex ii in the mail today and I was wondering if/how I can use it not on the camera. I looked all in the instructions for the flash and my 7D and still can't figure it out. Help

The only way to use the 580 as a slave with nothing else is to use the built in flash on the 7D along with it. That was the only way I could get it to work. Setting up wireless flash starts on page 119 of the 7D user manual. I have the 430 EX II flash so I don't know the page reference for your flash.

You also have to put the flash in slave mode... I dont have mine with me right now, but I think its done by holding the "Zoom" button and rotating the dial until it reads slave.

You could just get some inexpensive radio triggers. This would allow you to fire it without the popup and not require line of sight. You can get a relatively reliable set for a pretty cheap.
