Im torn on what camera to use untill i get an upgrade. I have an old minolta maxxium 400si 35mm with three or four lenses that i could use or a sony cyber shot point and shoot. Im at the point now where i want to try out things like shutter speed exposeure and a few other things that the P&S doesnt let me do. Ideas?

Why not use both? You can learn from both of them. Some P&S have a manual mode.

Do both - but stick to film and think film.
Think film: every shot you take costs $, thus don't take JUST B/C, make it count = not a waste of money.

You've probably answered your own question here: if you want to play with certain things then your older camera may be your best best - particularly if you want to teach yourself to use different lenses. It's less here about film v digital; it's more about the versatility of the choices you have at hand - P&S vs SLR could be film OR digital.

Always an eye-opener to stand in front of the same subject and try a shot with different lenses.

Keep a log while shooting, and make notes of each frame: shutter speed, f-stop, what lens was used - do that a few times while reviewing your negatives (or prints from them), and you will learn very quickly what you like and don't like - more importantly, how you achieved what you DO like.

Have fun! :D

Im leaning more twards film now. The digital will teach me composition and thats about it, not many settings to play with. It will also teach me that every shot counts if i use film. now i just need to find where to buy batteries for the darn thing..

why not a digital SLR?

I have had good luck at B&H and Batteries Plus stores for odd stuff you can't find at Wally World or CVS.
