I don't want to spend the money on a true macro lens (600, right?), but reverse macro is very limiting, being that I can only be a certain distance from the subject...and DOF is uncontrollable. Is there something $200 or under that will help with extreme closeup capabilities? Here's what I've seen: -Extension tubes, 10 bucks a set on ebay -Canon EF12 - $60ish. Any other ideas? Has anyone tried these?
Closeup filter or extension tubes. The latter will prevent your lens from working at infinity while mounted but increases the near focus distance.
There is the venerable EF 50 f/3.5 Macro. An older model bust still very capable. Just lacks the USM and internal focusing.
