I am attracted by the versatility & relative portability of the Sony RX10 for a trip to Kenya. My alternative is to pair a long-lens with my D7200 (say the Tamron 150-600G2?).

Any advice on which approach may be best?

I don't want to go the Sony route, only to be disappointed at the quality of the output(?), but then I don't want to lug around >10lbs of gear for the Nikon strategy when the output could be the same(?).

Safari? D7200 and the Tamron for sure.

Most safaris are in trucks so you won't do much walking or carrying. While the Sony would be a nice walk around camera, it is not really needed for this type trip. I would just stick with the D7200 and the Tamron 150-600. It would be the perfect setup in my opinion. Also, I would suggest a bean bag rather than a tripod. Tripods are pretty much useless in this situation. Bean bags come in handy bracing the camera on the edge of the truck.

I agree with the others, on most African safari you won't actually have to carry 10 lbs of gear, you will be traveling in a vehicle and not walking
