Standard lens...

Hi! I'm looking to get a standard lens for my canon F1, any recommendations? I'm rather new to film photography. I'd like to keep it under $500. Thank you in advance.*

You must get the Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 ... excellent quality, better than the f/1.8.

My lens suggestions (very biased) ... FD 24mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2.0, 50mm f/1.4, 100mm f/2.0, 200mm f/4.0 macro ... and finally 400mm f/4.5

Thank you. Can anyone tell me about Zeiss lenses for my F-1? Are they just as good as the modern day Zeiss?

Zeiss lens are considered to be outstanding; however, every manufacturer has great , ok and terrible product. It is going to depend. Which are you looking for or at? that might help narrow down the information we can provide.

I do not think there are any new Zeiss lenses made in the old, abandoned Canon manual focus lens mount. The "new" Zeiss lenses for Canon are for the EF mount, as far as I know. There are plenty of old Canon manual focus lenses floating around pawn shops and Goodwill stores and such. AE-1 and AE-1 programs come in with 50mm 1.8 lenses quite regularly, and sell for $20-$25, complete.
