I came across this beauty in front of someone's apt. in L.A. I've tried orchids. I re-pot them in orchid pots ( terracotta with slits on the sides so the roots can breathe) and orchid potting mix (no soiil, lots of coarse roots, etc.) and water them once a week by drenching with water and a little orchid fertilizer, allowing the water to drain out freely. They die. My friends take them home from Wholefoods, leave them in the original pots with no drainage, in soil, not orchid mix, and drop an ice cube in once a week and never give any orchid fertilizer - they keep blooming and last forever.
