I am considering purchasing the Tamron 150-600mm G1. Is it worth it?

I’ve read great things about the G2, but can anyone comment on the G1?

I’ve seen comparisons of the G2 to the Sigma 150-600 and Nikon 200-500, but unsure of the quality of the Tamron 150-600 G2. I’ve found it used for around $700.

Is it worth the $700? My budget wont allow for the G2 or the Sigma at the moment.

This would be for wildlife on a dx body

I did some searching on this site and the web. People seem to like the G1 so i went ahead and ordered a used one online. Looking forward to testing it out.

I have one I bought from mpb and I think it was around $650 in excellent condition. It does exactly what it is suppose to do. How much better is the G2, I can't comment but, I am happy with mine.

Mine just got here, paid about the same. This is my first lens of this size/focal length. What are you using for transport/storage? Do you hand shoot with this lens or use support? Nice photo! Looking forward to testing it out

I have a big lens case I keep it in when not in use. I use a Tamrac backpack with it attached to the camera body when I take it out. I use it hand held wide open at 1/1000 sec most of the time.

Look at the Think Tank Glass Taxi. It's supposed to hold some large lenses. I've got a Tamron 150-600mm G1 on the way and considering it.

Thanks! I’ll look into that.

I have shot with mine all over the place for setting, based on the need. I have shot ISO 64-9000. I have shot handheld as slow as 1/160 and as high as 1/1600 on a tripod depending on the need. I have shot f 5.6-11. I do find that 5.6 typically ends up being a little soft on mine and 7.1 or 8 shoot very well.

While it is a large lens, it is not ridiculous size like some low f-stop telephoto lenses.

In my old Pelican, S115 Sport Camera Backpack | Pelican bag it fit right down one side. It included a body, 5 other lenses and a speed light.

In my new Sky 51, https://www.vanguardworld.us/photo_video_us/alta-sky-51d-camera-backpack.html bag it fit horizontally next to my camera with 70-200 f2.8. I also have 3 other lenses, spare batteries, speed light, drone, drone controller, spare drone batteries, camera and drone chargers and some misc items.
