I know the green parts are lichen, I'm guessing the rest is just grass, hair, something that bends easily.
I think they rebuild every year. At least I haven't seen one used two years in a row.

How fast does lichen grow, that nest is glued on? Google reckons 1mm per year.

Mrs Magpie here last year changed her nest location still in the front tree, she took apart the original and remade it on a big old side branch last season. Her original nest was right in the crown of the tree which was 3 years old, she'd just rebed it each year.

That original spot went through one hell of a storm and didn't come down, i named that new magpie Stormy. But these trees bigger side branches seem to get weaker and snap and i hate the thought of it coming down in the spring winds.

Won't be long and Swoops will be chased away buy mum & dad and i gotta start all over again.
