The creative rut...

I force myself to shoot by strict rules - a round subject but in strict compliance with rule of thirds.
Or some such restriction, that will usually break the 'rut'

The most ironic thing is that his home page features him using a camera - on a tripod.

If I'm in a creative rut then its obviously something to do with my psyche. Stressed and too focussed on mundane practicalities of my life. I try to get moved by something. Find something in me I believe in and meditate on it. Think really deeply about what it actually is I dislike or like. What I'm trying to express. I also make notes a lot and hopefuly filter my ideas on the subject down to where an idea comes out.
