The first flash

Earlier today I was just messing around and taking pictures indoors with someone and well, the results were less than pretty. I then messed around with the built on flash (way too much), then a white piece of paper as sort of a reflector and the results were a wee bit better.

But then I realized I need an actual flash.

I've been looking at something on the cheaper end like the Yongnuo YN-560, yet I believe that is all manual (correct me if I'm wrong). Then I thought that I should spend a little more on a used 430EX. Anyone have thoughts on either one of those? Or maybe even a different model. ​
