Yep, in another run in with mall security, this time I was told that the reason I would not be able to photograph in the mall was because of September 11th, 2001. Not only that, but he told me that photography has been outlawed in PUBLIC since 9/11. I, of course, laughed... I then started to correct him, realized it wouldn't change anything, and left. Why would someone try to throw words like 9/11 around to get their way? He had a perfect valid reason for kicking me out, it's simply private property. Instead he chose to use 9/11 as a reason? Weaksauce.
It was good enough for our president..... :-/ Seriously... 9/11 has been tossed around so much as the primary reason for various security measures (as well as trampling personal freedoms). Don't expect any better from a rent-a-cop.
You should have told him that you were not informed and that you were on your way to deposit your camera equipment at the local cop shop so you didn't get arrested. Oh...and that unfortunately stupidity in public was still legal so the security guard was free to go about his business as normal.
UPDATE: I called the mall. The head of security made it clear that the officer must have meant the changes they made to their rules after 9/11. He claims that photography is not allowed on their grounds at all. When questioned about photography at the ice skating rink, he said that it's not allowed there. When I asked why people weren't stopped, he said each case is unique. I then asked him how it was unique if the rule states NO photography... how could it be unique? He then said that it was still against the rules if taking pics of the rink. I don't believe it one bit. I was singled out because of my larger than average camera (the equivalent which is sold in the mall), and they used a strong arm tactic of 9/11 on me to try and get me to stop. I am going back tonight to see if I spot camera users!
I never see any here. I like shooting in malls sometimes and am always looking for others doing it. I don't even see people using their cell-phone cameras. But I can tell you that if a security guy told me to stop I wouldn't do it till I was physically forced to do so. I would then get a petition going. I have been asked not to photograph the store displays - probably because they're afraid someone will copy their shelf arrangement art. LOL This is one great thing about having a camera with no mirror! I can stand there and take more pics the whole time just saying something like: All I'm doing setting up some menus. You'll hear it if I shoot. Hehehe, I'm sucha rebel..
Classic...:hail: I got stopped one time by a security guy....shooting downtown, but to get the angle, I had to step on private property. "Chuck" said..."are you shooting a picture"? I said...no, Im doing my banking...and walked off. :lmao: It is great to look like a retard...cause then they just shake it off. :lmao:
Hehehe... keep a little soft-porn clip on your memorycards and when the security guys hit you up you can make friends instead.
Since you already called the Mall, why don't you just tallk to their marketing/publicity guys and work out some deal? It could be a win-win situation. You should be given a press pass or something. Since you do publish the pics you take online, it is totally great publicity for them. You should try selling yourself to them again that way.
Got kicked out (well, not forcefully) a mall yesterday. Actually, I was outside trying to shoot a short videoclip. Interviewing people on the street. Completely forgot it was private property, so mister security guard came, we chatted, he told me to go to the mall office. But they did not allow us. 'Not even if the background is a blind wall?' No. Too bad. Oh well, it was my first mall ban. Can I now join your club...? pascal
