The Moon

Nice shot. I like the eerie vibe of it. Was this hand held or did you use a tripod (I know some people some how get moon shots hand held). lol. The only CC that I can give is maybe use the digital zoom to fine tune the focusing (manually).

Thanks! I used a tripod. I also didn't use the sharpest lens in the world, so this was the best that I could nail the focus with my gear. In hindsight, I should have also opted for faster shutter speeds to refine the edges on the texture of the moon but I'm frankly too lazy to go back out and shoot it. Next time

What lens did you use? For my moon shots, the only option I have for my Canon T2i is a 55-250mm kit lens. lol. I have my aperture set around f8 and underexpose by a stop or so. I'd have to heavily crop the pic though =(

Bahahahaaa, your moon thread is right above mine, and about 1000 times better! Good job! :)

I used the Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6. This was the result of a few exposures blended together, as to get the detail in the clouds and the moon. It was shot at f/8 as well. In order to avoid a bland picture of just the moon itself I tried to incorporate the clouds surrounding it in the composition so the moon didn't have to be dominant in the frame. I'm quite happy with the result!

I expect we will see many pictures of the moon tonight. Thank you! :)

Cool, cool. When you say a "blend of a few exposures," do you mean something like HDR? I've never shot the moon with clouds around, but your pic makes me want to. Just gotta get lucky at the timing of a day with some clouds since our balcony is positioned where, depending on the week/month, the moon will be at a good angle or it will be directly above and out of reach from the balcony (I don't want to go into the field or the parking lot of our apartment complex).

Yes, exactly like an HDR. Keep in mind the moon is moving so as you shoot your different exposures the moon will be in a different place, so you need to adjust the images so they line up first.

Yes, that is indeed the moon.

Nice shot, Tevo! My favorite shot of the moon with clouds.... shot at 200mm

Why underexpose? I'm no expert of moon photography, but assuming that capturing detail is the goal, I'd think that this would be a prime candidate for the ETTR principle.

OP, I like the shot. I was going to ask if it was multiple exposures and I guess it was--very cool, I'm going to try this as soon as the weather warms up.

If you expose for the sky, the moon will be blown. If you underexpose by a stop or so, you'll see all the detail on the surface of the moon without blown highlights.

Nice Charlie! I was about to use my 80-200 but I hadn't previsualized the clouds around the moon and was interested in the extra zoom. I guess there was a bit of tradeoff in sharpness, yours looks fantastic.
