Last week a buddy and I made the 3 1/2 hour drive down to Cape Cod in search of dark skies. Typically we head north, but foreground options are a little limited this time of year, and he had been looking at a lighthouse on the Cape for the last year. The weather forecast was questionable, we knew clouds would be rolling in, just didn't know when...plus we had no idea how the light pollution would be.
We pulled up to this beach and had to walk about a 1 1/2 miles out to the end of a point where the lighthouse was. The relief of finding dark, clear skies woke me right up. It really was an amazing place to photograph at night, with tons of different foreground options including a lighthouse that is no longer in use. We arrived a little early to scout out foregrounds, and as the Milky Way finally crested the horizon I had him stand on one of the sand dunes for a nice silhouette. Yes, the image is a little noisy, but it's also nothing that I plan on selling prints of. Just a cool moment and I've been enjoying pushing the 750 a bit to see what it's capable of.
