The Truth About HDR

Your "add a comment here" thing doesn't give much room.

HDR is a powerful technique which can be used to create genuinely new ways of looking at the world through photographs, new ways of expressing visual ideas. In general it is not used in these ways, which is a bit disappointing, but what can you do?

HDR is the Ghost Chili Pepper of the photography world. Too much and you are in trouble, just a touch and it can kick up an already good dish.

I personally use it a bunch at my job to highlight key architectural feature that would otherwise would not be highlighted. Also I tend to work in very gritty and texture laden area and I tend it makes these type of things really pop.

Sometimes, I think tonemapping is able to make images more magical. Sometimes it is exactly this feeling I get when looking at a scene, and I think it helps to convey that feeling by making it a little bit more "magical" by tonemapping it.

Why someone would look down on that, I do now know. I'm of the view that those who think they know the TRUTH, know nothing at all. That counts for both they who tonemap ALL shots and they who tonemap NO shots. Whether or not I use it all depends on the photograph in question, and what I want to show the viewer.

The response I would select is not listed:

It is like any other tool available to me: I use it when the situation warrants it.
