Least Bitterns, like Green Herons are masters at hiding in plain sight. There were three of us on the boat and almost all of us missed these guys on the first pass. They are small birds as you can see by the last one who is in the process of devouring a minnow and he is a full grown adult. Their coloration makes them perfect for reeds and grasses. Keep in mind these were shot with a 200-500mm Nikkor on a D500 at a distance of more than 20 feet away in a moving boat (generally drifting) as they are also right unfriendly and will disappear in the grasses at the first sign of danger.
