Third party flash question from son

My son has asked me to post this question for him. His original question was "is it true that third party flashes don't work with most cameras?"

I told him a better question would probably be "which third party flashes (remote or on-camera) will work with his Nikon D-5000?"

Most third-party flashes (Sigma, Braun, Sunpak, Vivitar, etc) will work with your camera. They have not have full functionality however; unless you buy a flash meant specifically for your brand, then you'll likely not have TTL metering, but you will have manual flash which is not difficult to master.

Some 3rd party flashes have TTL capabilities. Nissin, had models that will TTL w/ Nikon, Metz is another popular brand and I believe there are models w/ TTL capabilities.
Contact major retailers and speak w/ their sales' staff.
