Thoughts on D60 and D40x?

Lol socrates.

Anyway, I recommend the D40 over the D40x. It costs less and megapixels don't make much of a difference. Judging from reviews, it appears that the D40 actually has slightly better IQ (less noise, MORE DETAIL!!) than the D40x.

I agree with your recommendation.

By the way, I wasn't kidding about the manual stop-down!

Thanks for all the help! Looks like I made my decision now.

Between the 40x/60, I'd either spend a little more and step up to the D80 if you can which is a much more capable camera, or save your money and just get the D40 instead, which is better in a lot of ways than the 40x/60. Others have already pointed out the AF-S lens limitations. Save your money on the 40x/60 and get a NICE lens for a D40 instead.

Don't forget the d70 or d70s either, the bodies are a little bigger but they can autofocus older non-af-s lenses and will have similar IQ to the d40. Oh, and they are dirt cheap. I've seen them go for $350 on ebay.

a great website for camera reviews is dpreview.com
