To adjust or not to adjust settings

Ok so here is my question. Im scanning my negs on an Epson 4490 using the software provided. Should I adjust the image (brightness, contrast and so on) before it is scanned or should I just scan the neg raw and do the adjustments later in Photoshop. Would I loose detail if the image is underexposed and I do not brighten it pre-scan?

If you're scanning to an 8-bit format (like jpeg) adjust before, if you're scanning to 16 or 24 bit it's less critical.
