I think it should work. I don't photograph many birds in flight, but I think if I were to try I'd want to use at least f/5.6 or f/8 even if I were using a fast lens to get enough DOF to make sure I stayed in focus. A f/4-5.6 long zoom is also probably half the size and weight of a f/2.8 long zoom.
